Vulnerable citizens threatened
Somebody asked me a month ago for my best guess on the continuing impact of California's economic crisis on the nonprofit agencies that support people with developmental disabilities.

Is it really important to 'make the grade?'
For generations, parents have been pushing children to get good grades. When I was a kid, many of my classmates got $10 for an "A" and $5 for a "B", but I received nothing because good grades were simply expected. Today, students continue to receive rewards candy, cash, iPods, even cars -- for good grades from parents and schools.

Kern River on display
The Bakersfield Recreation and Parks, Water Resources and Public Works departments worked together to submit a grant proposal to the California State Resources Agency for Proposition 50 money.

Budget deficit question larger
The Californian asked: How should legislators and the governor solve California's budget crisis? What cuts should be made? What taxes should be increased?

Sexism in election reporting
I have a dream. And that dream allows an individual to get elected to any office upon issues, not gender. Three recent Opinion section articles addressed this issue. I would like to comment upon two of them.

Provide incentive to recycle
The American economy faces enormous challenges. Rather than debate a comprehensive strategy, let's start with a small environmental issue: recycling.

Speak up, people!
Kern County wants your help. To develop a master plan for parks and recreational facilities, county officials must know what residents want and what they believe is missing in their parks and recreational opportunities.

Step 2: Developing an actual plan
The master plan being developed for Kern County's parks and recreational facilities is not just a research paper. It will become a working plan that identifies projects to be developed, sets priorities and timelines for development, and determines methods for paying for park and recreational improvements.

How you can help
The community is invited to provide input about county parks development by completing a community or youth survey on-line at www.co.kern.ca.us/parks/.

Where have all the women gone?
Many contend Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin were treated unfairly by the press and others on the campaign trail.
