Fallout from Prop. 8
fires up readers
Not a civil rights issue
National cemetery dedicated on Sunday
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs continues a proud legacy as it breaks ground and dedicates Bakersfield National Cemetery on Sunday at 2 p.m.
Impeach Bush now
The atrocities of the Bush administration are unprecedented in their negative impact on the world, the U.S. and our Constitution. Bush must be held accountable. Impeachment is a necessary consideration.
Wake up America
We are now experiencing the consequences of an uneducated mob electing uneducated individuals to public office, the term for which is "mob rule." This is a result that the Founding Fathers hoped to prevent when they deliberately provided for a representative republic governed in accordance with a Constitution that placed the power to determine public policy in the hands of the educated few -- i.e., the more knowledgeable wealthy, and which by its terms was extremely difficult to amend. They intended thereby to avoid what they considered the unacceptable consequences of ignorance.
Joey Porter's off-base dog bite
Once in a while, I'll read something that goes a little farther than just causing me to silently consider what an idiot someone really is and makes me walk over to the computer and write a letter to the editor.
Mandate seat belts
All I have been hearing lately is how the crime rate is increasing and we are warned to not go out at night. The BPD is crying for more personnel, as is Sheriff Donny Youngblood.
Get kids to walk
Recently, I walked out of church and noticed how poor the air quality was. Once I was home, I pulled out of the copy of The Californian, and staring at me on the front cover was a picture of the fires occurring near L.A. I was wondering if that is the reason the air quality is poor.
See Christmas parade
The 26th annual Downtown Bakersfield Christmas Parade will begin at 5:45 p.m. Thursday at the corner of 22nd and L streets. It will continue south on L Street to 21st Street, turn west on 21st Street to G Street, turn south on G Street to 20th Street, and then turn east at 20th Street to go back to L Street.
Needs new metaphor
I read the most recent Letter of the Month and noticed that the writer was "pissed."
Marine earned reward
I recently read an article in The Californian about a Marine serving in Iraq. Although mortally wounded from friendly fire, he thrust his body over a grenade tossed by an insurgent, thus saving his comrades from being wounded or killed.
Don't blame economy
This is regarding the recent article by Felix Doligosa which blames "the economy" for the "recent surge in burglaries." I think that is an interesting theory. I am not certain it would hold up under scrutiny.
Ramifications of Prop. 8 still reverberate with readers
LET SUPREME COURT RULE
Farmers: Try protest
I have a perfect solution for those egg farmers who are going to be affected by the provisions of Proposition 2. Beat the majority, like gays and lesbians did over the gay marriage issue, by finding some activist judges who will blatantly disregard the will of the voters and allow you to continue to produce eggs as you have been.
Solutions to 'problem'
The "problem": Deputy sheriffs and deputy district attorneys are paid more than their superiors -- the sheriff and the D.A.
Soros successful
Congratulations to George Soros. After years of failure, he has finally bought a president for the far left loons and fooled millions of gullible Americans.
Fix health care
Christine Bedell's recent article on the funding problems of the Healthy Families Program, through which health insurance for children can be obtained, is yet another stark example of our dysfunctional health care situation. We spend twice as much per capita on health care as other First World countries and still have 45 million people with no health insurance. Those of us with health insurance, except multimillionaires, know that we could be bankrupted by co-payments, deductibles and caps on benefits if a major family illness occurs.
Editorial got it wrong
Concerning the recent editorial, "Democrats in power must not overreach," my opinion differs. I refer to the comment in the editorial: "It was his (Bush's) ineffectiveness and single-minded pursuit of an ultra-conservative agenda that put the Democrats where they are now." President Bush was not "ultra conservative." As support of my position I offer the following: Bush's fiscal policy of increased spending, national directives in education with No Child Left Behind, impotence caused by the non-use of the veto, and the mishandling of the immigration bill.
Lieberman a 'Judas'
It seems that the new naive president-elect is already starting to show signs of cracking, as he has pardoned "Judas" Lieberman for spitting not only on him, but on all Democrats.
Stupid people should not vote
I used to think everyone should vote. After this last election and the ACORN group taking people into vote and telling them to be sure and vote Democrat, I have changed my mind.
Thank you, Bob!
I opened my Californian the other day and saw Lois Henry's column, "KHSD loses steady hand in rough waters." I was delighted, thinking that the column would be a tribute to Bob Hampton's service. Alas, it was not to be. It was only an attempt to dredge up more coverage of past board issues and what seemed to me an unnecessary comment by a board member.
