Charming? Slightly psychotic?

“It’s both,” he admits.

The ducks’ imaginary hosedown and bulk-up dinner will be the only strategies you’ll have on your side at Saturday’s race at Riverside Park. The duckies are dropped from a bridge and left to the whims of the Kern River.

The winner of the main race nabs $1,000, while second and third earn $500 and $250, respectively.

This is the Kern Valley Exchange Club’s major fundraiser for its favorite causes, child abuse prevention and scholarships for college-bound seniors. Last year, the club raised around $20,000.

A deep-pit barbecue lunch for two is included in the purchase of a duck in the main race.

There’s also the lame-duck “50-50” race, where you can earn half the entry fee spoils (the other half goes to the club), and the “odd duck” race featuring Elvis and other “celebrity” quackers, also a “50-50.”

There will be a drawing for a 32-inch flat screen TV and a Toshiba laptop.

You can pick up a duck the day of the event, but the main race sells out fast, so call Smith for details.
